News - 11/23/2021

Hello my friends!

Much has changed since the last time I posted an update, and the last few months have been a mixture of good and bad news...

First, we'll get the bad news out of the way. A while back I talked about the creation of a new company called Orbweaver Studios and a new game called Ruin. The short version is that for now I am effectively no longer part of Orbweaver, or Ruin's development. The primary takeaway is that I'm back on my own and continuing under "Gravity Games", for the foreseeable future.

Now, to the good news. For the past several (several) years, I've built a new 3D "engine" for CTHON II, "engine" being in the context of the Game Maker Studio 2 engine. Although its still Game Maker like its predecessor, its tech is essentially that of Doom's rather than Wolfenstein's, if you're familiar with CTHON 1. Generally, I dislike showing my games at an early development stage, but I plan to put up some progress shots in a subsequent post soon, as I think if you've been following me all these years on itch, with very few updates, you deserve to know where CTHON is going next.

Much of CTHON II's design is influenced by my own thoughts on how to improve the game (and shooters with procedural dungeon elements in general), as well as what my friends, colleagues, and you, the players, have suggested over the years. Feel free to comment below and tell me what you'd like to see in CTHON II, anything you liked and disliked about CTHON, etc. No promises can be made of course, but its always helpful to know what everyone's thoughts are. I appreciate everyone who has followed me over the years, as your interest is a big factor in why I'm continuing. Here is to a bright future for CTHON!

Happy to hear a Cthon2 is in the works!!

I'm glad! I hope it will exceed the original in every way possible.

Hey man! I really enjoy your game CTHON. The atmosphere and music still haunts my mind till today when I think about it.

Hmm what I like about the game? I love the music. I love the weapon and enemy design, and I like the pixel graphics. The whole game is wonderfully made overall and it reminds me a little bit of Marathon except if it's lovecraftian and in a Wolf3D-inspired engine.

Now what I don't like about it? Well the Grenadier class is useless as his main weapons runs out of ammo fast. I find myself using the projectile class the most while the melee class's only advantage is his movement speed.

Also I don't like how difficult it is on normal difficulty. I could only complete the game on easy and I have been playing shooters since I was a kid. Enemies are extremely unforgiving and they can chew your health faster than an MG42 spewing out lead. I feel that there should a window for you to evade their attacks.

Lastly, I think it will be great if there is a secret counter for each level so that I don't have to keep backtracking looking for any secret that I have left out

Despite it's flaws, it deserves a cult following and I'd look forward to CTHON 2

Now what I love to see in CTHON 2? More creepy atmosphere. More weapons. More upgrades... and reworked difficulty

Hello, thanks for the comments!

You address a lot of good points. The creepy atmosphere and music will definitely still be a top priority (and hopefully scarier than the original).

I agree on your points about classes and difficulty. I plan to balance the classes a bit better this time by possibly adding some more unique elements or abilities to them so that they each have some way of dealing with or working around problems as they are encountered. The classes in CTHON could have started with more different traits from each other but they ended up fairly bare-bones, mostly due to time.

Difficulty will definitely be reworked as well. In particular easy was on the whole too difficult, which I plan to address. And yeah, I think it could be good to have both an enemy and secret counter accessible during the level, much like Quake.

Thanks again!
